“Waterless Innovation at its Finest”
The global dry shampoo market is winning from many positive factors. First and foremost dry shampoo has stimulated the interest of the thriving working-class community, globally, who are looking for hair products suitable for their hectic lifestyles. On-the-go beauty is a trending area that is growing by leaps and bounds. Simply put, this market segment loves the idea of washing away the day after work or a fantastic workout at the local gym. Dry shampoo is best suited in this situation, as ordinary use of conventional shampoo leads to loss of strength and shine.
Here’s why: Google trends show that search terms involving “dry shampoos” has risen by 180% and in just the last 24 months. These searches are also branching over into other new trending categories like “Beauty on-the-go” and “Men’s Grooming.” Your invitation to innovation starts here!
Quick Fact: By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity.
However, as we adapt to an ever-changing world, companies must be able to offer products that confront future water strains while maintaining a level of efficacy consumers demand. Dry shampoos will sustain their growth not only because of global issues but due to the growing number of people who use them. 52% of US consumers think dry shampoo is a great on-the-go application, while 49% believe it saves time, and 44% feel it allows them to use traditional shampoo less frequently.
Create “Dry Water” with Evonik’s Fumed Silica
AEROSIL® fumed silica has many applications in hair care products, particularly Dry Shampoo, providing an easy alternative to time-consuming wet washing and drying. Combined with other powder ingredients, AEROSIL® provides a volumizing effect to styling aids, and since Dry Water contains mostly an aqueous phase by weight, the formulation also moisturizes the hair.
Dry Water Concept
Water or dilute aqueous solutions can be converted to a dry powder with the help of super hydrophobic AEROSIL® R 812. The powdery product can contain up to 95 % w/w of an aqueous phase. Under mechanical stress, for example, when the product is rubbed onto the skin, the water is released. In this way, solutions contain- ing vitamins, plant extracts and/or other active ingredients can be converted to powdered products. “Dry Water” is created by producing fine water droplets in the presence of the hydrophobic AEROSIL® during a high shear mixing process. While mixing the fine water droplets are coated by the hydrophobic silica which prevents the water droplets from coalescing.
In the personal care industry, AEROSIL® R 812 S can be used as a free flow agent and rheology controller. It is well known in products like styling agents (dry water) and dry shampoos. Using AEROSIL® R 812 S is also recommended for sprays (e.g., antiperspirant) and powder-to-cream applications
No Sebum, No Sweat with Microzest 25
The Microzest series is a texturizing and styling powder, ideal for creating volume and structural texture for an immediate volume generation, a hair texture expansion, and a traceless mat finish. The Microzest 25 Bamboo has a high sebum absorption while Microzest 25 Rice adds a volumizing and texturing effect.
This very fine powder (less of 25 microns) obtained by micronization of silica concretions contained in bamboo, absorbs sebum and sweat. This makes Microzest 25 Bamboo ideal for “on-the-go” dry shampoo formulations.
Thanks to its sebum absorption capacity, Microzest 25 rice is an ideal ingredient to formulate dry shampoo. The particles sizes dispersion allows a perfect flow of the powder through all the orifices of the aerosol delivery system and presents a proper distribution of the powder in aerosol without agglomeration. Furthermore, when Microzest 25 Rice is used in dry shampoo formulas it participates in obtaining a volumizing and texturizing effect.
